About WBI

Energy is all around us. It’s in the ground we walk upon, in the sunlight we feel, in the air we breathe.

Who we are:

The WBI is a university-based coalition of scientists and industry professionals that helps the innovative talent in Wisconsin create, commercialize, and promote bioenergy solutions. Our goal is to harness the talent, creativity, and natural resources in Wisconsin to build a renewable energy landscape in our home state and beyond.

What we believe:

For hundreds of years, we have built societies and economies on fossil fuels, without planning for the day when traditional energies run out. As we look forward to a better energy future, we are beginning to discover the vast stores of energy all around us. It’s in the plants we see every day, from stems, stalks, and grasses to corncobs and all sorts of woody plants. Even waste materials from landfills, farming, and forestry hold valuable stores of energy. As we come to grips with the limitations of fossil fuels, we are beginning to realize the endless possibilities of bioenergy.

What we do:

The WBI provides objective research, education, and outreach related to all areas of bioenergy, including biopower, biofuels, and biomaterials. We collaborate with academia, businesses, governmental and non-governmental organizations to develop projects that focus on biomass supply and near-term bioenergy technologies.

Already the WBI has more than 250 scientists conducting cutting-edge research every day, creating innovative technologies and testing hundreds of promising theories – any of which could prove the key to solving the energy dilemma. A joint initiative across the University of Wisconsin System drawing from federal, state and regional resources, the WBI brings together the foremost minds in energy science to generate a future fueled by renewable power.
