Sustainability
Bioenergy offers the potential of a domestically produced, carbon-neutral, flexible energy supply for transportation, electricity production, industrial demand and residential use. In designing a bioenergy future, however, new sustainability challenges arise. Food availability, land use, water, climate impacts, air quality and interconnections with other components of the energy infrastructure and natural environment will all be affected. These, in turn, impact public health, ecosystem services, economic development, political stability, cultural landscapes and human well-being.
